Open Source Should Be Self-reliant? How Huawei Copies the Google Model

May Event Record: A Comprehensive Interpretation of Huawei Event!

On May 15, President Trump signed an executive order requiring the United States to enter a state of emergency in which U.S. enterprises are prohibited from using telecommunications equipment produced by enterprises that pose a risk to national security. In this regard, foreign media interpret that the intention is to prohibit American companies from dealing with Huawei.

On May 16, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Industry and Security (BIS) listed Huawei as an entity list. Entry into the list means that without the permission of the U.S. government, all U.S. companies will not be able to supply Huawei in the future.

On May 16, Huawei responded for the first time, "Huawei is an unparalleled leader in 5G telecommunications equipment. We are also willing to communicate with the U.S. government measures to ensure product safety. If the United States restricts Huawei... it will only force the United States to use inferior and expensive alternative equipment, lagging behind other countries in the construction of 5G network, ultimately harming the interests of American enterprises and consumers.

On May 17, Huawei Haisi sent an internal letter announcing that the spare tire chip had been "all corrected": after years of hard work, it fulfilled its promise of continuous service to customers overnight. A person in charge of Huawei Operator BG said, "More than a decade ago, IBM put forward business continuity management in Huawei to prevent today's situation... Although the performance may not be comparable to the original scheme in the short term, there is no problem in maintaining business continuity." Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business, forwarded a letter from President Huawei Haise to employees and commented, "In the early years, Huawei was the most difficult period for brand and operation of consumer business. We also insisted on building our core competence of chips, insisting on using and cultivating our own chips, while continuing to use some American chips and components." "This restrictive list in the United States is a huge loss not only to Huawei, but also to suppliers of chips, software and components in the United States."

On May 19, Google suspended some business cooperation with Huawei. According to Reuters, in addition to the open source part of the Android operating system, Google stopped providing closed source applications and technical support to Huawei's authorized Android system, such as Google Play Store, Google Voice Control Assistant, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and other applications. Huawei devices can be downloaded but will not be accessed properly.

On May 20, under the pressure of Trump's government, the US chip giant began to withdraw its offer to Huawei. According to Bloomberg, American chip manufacturers such as Intel, Qualcomm, Sales and Bloom have told their employees that they will not supply Huawei until further notice is received.

On May 21, Ren Zhengfei received interviews from more than 20 media and CCTV, responding to questions such as Google's disconnection, the "90-day moratorium delay" in the United States, 5G R&D and Haise chips. "Huawei's growth rate will decline after the US ban, but it will not cause negative growth of the company or harm the industry." "It's hard for Hua to make chips for himself, (but we) gritted our teeth and slowly survived." "Huawei's 5G will definitely not be affected. In terms of 5G technology, other people will certainly not catch up with Huawei in two or three years." "Huawei is not going to lose its confession. We are ready."

On May 23, the list of companies that announced a suspension of cooperation with Huawei continued to increase. British telecom operators have "suspended" the sale of Huawei 5G mobile phones. Marc Allera, chairman of EE, responded that Huawei "suspended" the sale of Huawei 5G mobile phones because Huawei can not "ensure" that its services can support long-term mobile phone contracts, "we have to do so"; Microsoft removed Huawei's notebook list from Microsoft's online store, even in Microsoft stores. It is impossible to search any hardware equipment of Huawei; Toshiba Shanghai announced that it would stop cooperating with Huawei; KDDI and Softbank, two major Japanese Telecom operators, said that they would postpone the sale of new Huawei P30 series contracts...

On May 26, in CCTV's "Face to Face" program, Ren Zhengfei said: We never thought we would die. "We have made 20,000 gold medals, and the inscription on them is Huawei, which is immortal." "Victory must belong to us."

On May 27, the Wi-Fi Alliance for Wireless Technology Standards and the SD Association for SD Storage Card Standards both removed Huawei from its membership list and terminated its relationship with Huawei. According to foreign media reports, the temporary loss of membership does not mean that Huawei cannot produce products using Wi-Fi, but Huawei will no longer have a say in the future development of Wi-Fi technology.

On May 29, the academic community "failed", and the IEEE prohibited Huawei employees from participating in reviewing manuscripts. After the exposure of the Entity List, international standards-setting organizations such as IEEE have long announced that Huawei is restricted from participating in the development of 5G standards, and many American universities have cut off their cooperation with Huawei. But a part of the suspected IEEE internal email to the editor-in-chief of the journal was exposed, pointing out that the editor-in-chief of the journal was required by the IEEE not to allow a reviewer or editor with Huawei background to be a member of the peer review of the journal.

On May 29, industry organizations such as WiFi Alliance, Bluetooth Technology Alliance and JEDEC Association (Solid State Technology Association) have all resumed Huawei's membership.

On June 3, IEEE China issued the latest statement that employees of Huawei and its subsidiaries can participate in peer review and editing of the IEEE publishing process, and all IEEE members can continue to be normal.
